The development of the animas river trail northern extension is partially funded by a $1,382,955 grant from great outdoors colorado. There were tables, benches, and green grassy areas for kids to play.

Used as both a walking and biking path, the animas river trail is a hard surface path that runs alongside the animas river where it cuts through the town of durango.

The final plans are to extend the animas river trail from animas city park at east 32nd avenue all the way to oxbow park and preserve, just about a mile away. The trail provides connectivity between downtown, parks, and the library, to miles of other trail systems, and now to oxbow park and the animas river itself. There’s nothing more relaxing than letting the river do the work. We ate in our car in the parking area. We were delighted to find this lovely free public park right on the banks of the animas river in downtown durango.

There are plans to extend the trail out to the popular three springs subdivision south of town and construction has already started in the northern part of town extending from animas city park to oxbow park and preserve. There are various points of access along the trail, with the north end of the trail beginning at the new oxbow trailhead (39th and main/550 north). Divided into two distinct areas, oxbow has deemed 38 acres as a natural preserve that is undeveloped to remain a home for wildlife and for conservation purposes.

There will also be new public green space, including new trees, at the northwest corner of e. Following the animas river, the trail is inundated daily with walkers, joggers, cyclists, commuters, anglers, and rafters and kayakers, as well as people just enjoying a picnic along the river banks. Animas river, three springs trail connection in the works 3/1/2021 durango parks and recreation will launch a number of major improvements this year including durango mesa park, pickleball courts at three springs, and completion of the animas river trail to three springs.
